History and Foundation
The winery’s history has its roots in 1890, when Fioravante Sottano, an Italian immigrant, settled in Mendoza to cultivate vineyards and produce wine. However, the modern project was born in 1998, when his grandsons (Diego, Pablo, and Mauricio Sottano) decided to revive the family legacy and build a high-end winery. In 2016, the winery was acquired by the Vicentin family, who maintained the prestige and quality that characterizes it.
Architectural Details
Located in the prestigious area of Perdriel, the winery features a modern and functional architectural design, intended to optimize winemaking processes. Its clean-lined structure contrasts with the rugged landscape, and its interior features an imposing room of small-sized stainless steel tanks (for controlled vinifications) and an underground cellar designed to maintain perfect temperature and humidity conditions.
What to expect on a visit?
The visit to Sottano is intimate and detailed. Guides take visitors through the vineyards at the foot of the Andes Mountains, explaining the vine training system. Then, the milling, fermentation, and barrel cellar areas are toured. The experience culminates with tastings of their premium and super-premium lines, standing out for a relaxed atmosphere and spectacular views.
Their Wines
Sottano is recognized for producing wines of great concentration, color, and structure. They work exceptionally well with Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their icon wine, “Judas”, is one of the most coveted Malbecs in Argentina, characterized by its immense complexity and prolonged aging in oak barrels.
Fun Facts
- The name of their icon wine, “Judas”, was born from a family betrayal. Initially, this wine was exclusively for family consumption, but one of the brothers began selling it secretly. When the others found out, they decided to commercialize it under that name.
