Salentein Winery

Uco Valley

Salentein Winery
Absolute pioneer of the Uco Valley, world-famous for its cross-shaped architecture and its spectacular circular cellar.

History and Foundation

Founded in 1996 by visionary Dutch entrepreneur Mijndert Pon, Salentein is considered the pioneer winery that put the Uco Valley on the global winemaking map. Pon recognized the unexplored potential of this high-altitude region and made unprecedented investments, transforming an area of rugged landscapes into one of the most coveted and prestigious terroirs in Argentina.

Architectural Details

The architectural majesty of Salentein is overwhelming. The main winery is designed in the shape of a cross (Greek cross), allowing for careful handling of the grapes and wine through a gravity system that spans three levels. However, its greatest milestone is the underground cellar: a huge circular stone amphitheater located eight meters deep, in the center of which rests a compass rose oriented to the cardinal points and a grand piano.

What to expect on a visit?

The experience transcends oenology to become a comprehensive cultural immersion. Before reaching the winery, visitors pass through the Killka Space, a gallery exhibiting a valuable collection of contemporary Argentine and Dutch art. On the winery tour, the highlight is the descent to the circular cellar, where the perfect acoustics sometimes allow you to hear guides or guests play the grand piano while the wine rests in the barrels. On the premises, you can also visit the beautiful Chapel of Gratitude.

Their Wines

Led by legendary winemaker José “Pepe” Galante (considered one of the fathers of modern oenology in Argentina) and currently by Jorge Cabeza, Salentein’s wines reflect the freshness and intensity of the Uco Valley. Their lines range from the young and fruity “Portillo” and the artistic “Killka”, to their prestigious “Salentein Reserve”, “Numina”, and the top-of-the-range “Primus”, standing out exceptionally in Malbec and Pinot Noir.
